Our
Story

The S.I.M.S. Foundation of Alabama was created from a lifelong commitment to service, mentorship, and advocacy for youth across the state. Founded by Tyler Sims, a devoted educator and behavioral specialist, the foundation represents years of passion and purpose directed toward empowering children to overcome challenges and realize their full potential.

Tyler’s story began in the classroom, where he discovered the power of connection and mentorship. As a teacher and coach, he designed programs that built leadership, teamwork, and accountability—helping students not only grow academically but also develop the life skills needed to succeed beyond the classroom. His years with the Boys & Girls Club of Central Alabama further strengthened his impact, giving him the opportunity to mentor hundreds of youth through programs centered on confidence, character, and community.

Before becoming an educator, Tyler’s own academic path broke barriers. He graduated Cum Laude from Jacksonville State University with a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences, where he made history as the first African American male to be named Most Outstanding Student in Human Sciences. He also served as the first male and African American student representative on the Human Sciences Advisory Board, and became the university’s first SPAN Program intern. Tyler’s leadership extended beyond academics—serving as Vice President of S.O.A.R (Survivors of Abusive Relationships) and President of the National Society of Leadership and Success – Bevill State Chapter, proving his commitment to service and advocacy long before the foundation was born.

These experiences shaped a mission rooted in compassion, equity, and action. Through his later work as a Behavioral Specialist at Pathway Inc. / Camp Mitnick, Tyler guided at-risk youth through evidence-based interventions and life skills training, providing consistent mentorship and emotional support. It was there that he recognized the need for a statewide initiative that could reach children and families beyond one facility—and The S.I.M.S. Foundation of Alabama was born.

Standing for Service, Inspiration, Mentorship, and Support, the foundation continues Tyler’s vision to uplift Alabama’s youth through literacy, wellness, and family empowerment. Each program is a reflection of his journey—a reminder that when education, compassion, and opportunity come together, transformation follows.
